Another tough test for us this week. Away to local rivals Denham, albeit a less arduous journey than the previous weekend. Numbers were up on recent weeks, and we had fourteen to select from. Early honours were shared with both teams looking to establish themselves on the pitch. Denham probed and enjoyed good possession, but we more than held our own and looked dangerous with Savanna and Ocean causing problems. The Stones then came close to breaking the deadlock on 20 minutess. Savanna burst clear down our left, but was chopped to the ground just outside the box. Ocean composed herself to strike the free kick over the wall, and with the keeper beat the ball struck the bar and away to safety. Enjoying our best spell Ocean also forced the Denham keeper into a smart stop minutes later before our hosts took charge of the game. Conceding a cheap free kick in our half, we failed to defend adequately with the set piece and found ourselves behind 1-0. Deflated by the goal, Denham ramped up the pressure, and added two more goals during the remainder of the half. The first was a hopeful ball into the channel which eluded our defence, though the finish was top class from a tight angle 2-0. The final goal in the dying seconds came from the same player. She was allowed time and space to pick her spot from just inside the box to leave us 3-0 down going into the break. Halftime 3-0.
With every decision seemingly going against us, we looked to settle the girls down during the intermission and focus on reducing the deficit. This however did not go to plan as Denham started the second period well and were enjoying the lion share of the ball. They controlled the game and only some strong defensive work from Chloe and co at the back stopped us falling further behind. With our girls continually agitated by the trigger happy official we found Denham hard to break down, not though through lack of trying. Despite this we eventually succumbed to another two goals from Denham who were now well on top with 15 mins to go 5-0. Our best player again today, it was Savanna who looked to salvage something out of the game for us. After running their left back ragged all game, she finally came up with the finish to match her approach play scoring on 80 mins 5-1.This finished the scoring during the game and Denham ran out convincing winners on the day. Although the score line was emphatic today this doesn’t tell the full story. We had chances early on, but after going behind looked to take on the referee, rather than our opponents who took full advantage. Defensively we worked hard but fitness is an issue, although Ginge`s return was a real plus factor for the future. Congrats to Denham who played well, and will win plenty more games than they will lose during the season. POM and goalscorer Savanna x1
